Satyam Mishra, a 2021 finalist for the Global Teacher Prize, is redefining what it means to be a teacher in today’s world. From growing up in Bhagalpur, India, to training teachers in 18 countries and earning a place at Harvard University, Satyam’s journey speaks to the transformative power of education and educators.
Inspiring moments abound in his career: helping a young boy in Iraq envision rebuilding Mosul, ending corporal punishment in Ethiopian classrooms, and teaching at Malala Yousafzai’s school in Lebanon. Satyam has used every opportunity to elevate the teaching profession, believing that equity begins with empowered teachers.
Currently finishing his Master’s in Education at Harvard, Satyam plans to return to India to train teachers in Bihar and Jharkhand, regions where many schools are under-resourced. For him, teacher training is a non-negotiable path to educational equity. As he says,
“If we want to reach every child, teacher training is the way forward.”
