EduSpots - Igniting Community-Led Education

Getrude Akunlibe, Dulugu Spot Founder and EduSpots’ Northern Regional Coordinator shared that her “education stopped when the chalk ran out. With one torchlight shared by my family, I persisted, determined to change the narrative for the next generation.”

Indeed 35% of learners in rural areas of Ghana do not complete primary school (UNESCO; 2020). We believe that the talents, ideas and energy of students, teachers, and parents are not fully harnessed in addressing educational inequity.

As a response, EduSpots connects, trains, and equips a growing network of over 400 local Catalysts like Getrude to lead the creation of 50 innovative community-owned learning hubs called ‘Spots’ using digital tools such as tablets, WhatsApp and the EduSpots app.

Through the Spots, thousands of learners engage in playful, community-rooted, and future-ready learning through a co-curricular clubs model, increasing their engagement in education and inspiring civic action. Learners don’t just benefit – they become Catalysts, creating a self- multiplying effect and are fast becoming becoming tomorrow’s changemakers.

Our Purpose

EduSpots ultimately aims to create a world in which communities unite to create the futures they want to see through education, aiming to build a network of over 1 million grassroots Catalysts reimagining education in their communities by 2035.

The key areas of long-term impact that we aim to create (and measure) relating to this are:

•   Learners become lifelong learners and active global citizens

•   Catalysts (community volunteers - a mix of teachers, students and community members) become motivated, critically informed and active global citizens

•   Community members work together to advance educational outcomes.

•   Other organisations adopt and collaborate on aspects of our model of community-driven education.

Why contribute to this project?

At one calculation in 2024, it costs just £15/ year under our model to enable learners to access a range of high-quality clubs across early years education, gender equity, digital skills and STEM and sustainability, supported with study space, mentorship and resources.

Alongside this, through our educational and training model, Catalysts are transforming pedagogy in schools, with the recent Independent Evaluation with Expectation State noting that “The shift towards more learner-centred, inclusive, and practical teaching methods has transformed school- based pedagogy, making education more relevant and engaging for students.”

Unlike top-down interventions, our solution involves over 400 local actors in designing, leading and sustaining change. Their ownership is proven: 25% of our existing Spots were launched by past Catalysts expanding the model organically; 50% of our staff team have Catalyst backgrounds, ensuring lived expertise guides our approach.

As one Catalyst from Ameyaw Spot commented: ‘We are not just implementing a pre-set model. Our ideas and experiences are actively shaping how EduSpots evolves. It’s a truly collaborative effort.”
