A school that help children grow up their own food | Greece

In elementary school of Diafani, Karpathos, the only two students and their teacher Theodora, are trying to build an alternative and creative school of nature!

Vasilis and Marinos have already made two types of gardens:

- A vegetable garden that they have been planted tomatoes, potatoes, onions, strawberries, eggplants, pumpkins and peppers,

- A botanical garden that they have been planted basil, diosmos, mint, oregano, lavender, parsley, radish and aloe vera.

Students have to learn that the most basic lessons they have to achieve in their life, is how to survive by themselves, live independently and understand how nature works. Of course through this process they are going to learn that plants and trees that surrounds us, is the most basic part of our life and they have to put emphasis on the fact that they have to take care and respect the mother nature by planting trees, keep their environment clean and protect her from trushes and fires.

Of course, if we see this lesson through the eye of alternative education, kids will learn that their life is in their hands. Even if they don't succeed in education parts, even if they don't study and will not become professionals, it doesn't mean they are incapable or useless. Otherwise, they are still capable of continuing their life by making their own food using their own hands. Probably they can take the advantage and use their skills in horticulture, by making a very big garden or a green house that helps them to survive and of course they can still sell their crops and fruits helping themselves make their own money.

So school is not only about lessons, studies, and letters. It's also the portal to understanding and respecting nature and of course, living from her.
