Teacher Tales |
Vasilis and Marinos are the last students in primary school of Diafani Karpathos. Vasilis is 12 years old and Marinos is 7 years old. They are leaving in Olymbous village and every day at 07:00 o' clock in the morning, they use to take the bus in order to come and join the school's subjects. Their life is extraordinary, unique and difficult since they have no external activities to join in. So, three times per week Marinos with his parents, teavel about 1 hour long to Pigadia, which is the main city of Karpathos to help Marinos in learning a second language and join the chess club. The same road follows Vasilis too, who joins the local football team. But the road is too difficult since is full of tight turns and there is always the danger of falling rocks from the big mountains of the island. There is no bus nor other transportation to help kids in traveling from Olympous to Pigadia and back to their homes and the only can move by their parent's car.
So, in this old --traditional school the teacher Theodora with their only two students decided to transform this ordinary school in an alternative place with alternative teaching methods. The basic aim was to offer educational stimuli and helping students to learn through playing and gain new educatinal skills. Thus, both kids will be able to expand their intellectual horizons, be more confident and feel more powerful and optimistic about their future dreams.
After learning sign language, kids had the oportunity to learn Robotics using a special Lego kit. Vasilis and Marinos was very excited when they discoverd that their very own robot was following the computer program that they made. Every week they used to build almost three lego robots and sometimes they designed their own robots using their imagination and creative.
Robotics lesson was helped students to increase their focus, improved their fine motor skills, contributed in learning new methods in mathematics and of course endorsed their creativity.
This studens had the chance to learn a modern skill in a remote and traditional village which lacks of basic infrastructures and crusial life amenities.
