National Teacher Prize |
Patricio Vilches, a dedicated Basic General Education teacher from Cabildo in the Valparaíso Region, works in a unique single-teacher school in a rural setting, teaching students from first to sixth grade. In this close-knit environment, he has cultivated a culture of mentorship and collaboration, where older students support and guide their younger peers.
Patricio has also pioneered several innovative initiatives, including "The Scientists of the Country," a program that engages students in scientific research tied to their rural surroundings. Additionally, his "Academies Explore Valparaíso" project encourages students to dive into groundbreaking work, such as studying ancient organic rennet biotechnology and examining bird nests during droughts.
These projects not only spark a passion for science but also empower students by helping them appreciate the scientific value of their rural community. In recognition of his exceptional contributions, Patricio was named the winner of the Varkey Foundation supported ninth edition of the Global Teacher Prize Chile. He dedicated this prestigious award to the over 1,080 single-teacher schools across the country, highlighting the vital role of these educators in shaping young minds.
The awards ceremony was held at the Municipal Theatre of Las Condes and was attended by prominent authorities, including the Minister of Education, Nicolás Cataldo; and the Regional Director of UNESCO in Chile, Esther Kuisch Laroche.
