Mahamba Ihonde, a dedicated educator and 2025 Global Teacher Prize finalist, has been honoured with the Leadership and Organisation Award after co-chairing the prestigious Africa ELTA International Conference 2025.

Held under the banner of the Africa English Language Teachers Association (Africa ELTA), the conference brought together more than 400 delegates from across the African continent, including Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Zambia, South Africa, Senegal, Cameroon, Ghana, Nigeria, Madagascar, and Egypt, as well as international attendees from Greece, Qatar, the UK, and the USA.

Mahamba described the experience as both humbling and inspiring:

“I am deeply honoured and grateful to Africa ELTA for trusting me with the incredible responsibility of co-chairing the 2025 conference. It’s been a journey filled with collaboration, growth, and meaningful exchange across our continent and beyond.”

The conference agenda featured a wide range of professional development activities, including teaching tips, research presentations, storytelling, panel discussions, workshops, materials development, technology integration in ELT, teacher motivation, and policy dialogues on language education.

Receiving the Leadership and Organisation Award was a powerful recognition of collective effort:

“This award is not just a personal milestone, but a celebration of what we can achieve when we work with passion, purpose, and unity.”

Mahamba continues to make a lasting impact on English language education, bringing together educators, elevating teaching practices, and inspiring future leaders in classrooms across Africa and beyond.
