Global Teacher Prize 2021 Winner Keisha Thorpe was honoured to attend the Celebrating The United States' Return to UNESCO event held on 17 October 2023 at the White House in Washington D.C., USA. Keisha had the fantastic opportunity to speak with UNESCO's Director-General, Audrey Azoulay, First Lady of the United States, Dr Jill Biden and Dr Mae Carol Jemison, American engineer, physician and former NASA Astronaut.
The speakers at the event included First Lady of the United States, Dr Jill Biden, UNESCO's Director-General, Audrey Azoulay, United States Senator from Delaware, Christopher Andrew Coons and American engineer, physician and former NASA Astronaut, Dr Mae Carol Jemison. A highlight of the event was a surprise visit from the President of the United States, Joe Biden.
Since July 25, the US flag proudly flies once more at UNESCO headquarters, symbolising the renewed dedication of the United States to worldwide cooperation in education, culture, and science. This reinstatement signifies the nation's reintegration into UNESCO's diverse international community of nations, reports UNESCO.
