Subash Chandar K is an innovative and dedicated mathematics educator whose journey into teaching is a testament to perseverance and passion. From struggling academically during his early years to emerging as a pioneer in education, Subash has transformed the learning experience for countless students in New Zealand and beyond. 

Initially reluctant to pursue teaching, Subash faced numerous setbacks, including failing his engineering studies and the first three years of his mathematics degree. However, his determination led him to complete his qualifications in seven years, proving resilience to be a cornerstone of his success. Inspired to help others overcome their own academic challenges, Subash embarked on a teaching career, ultimately revolutionizing how mathematics is taught in New Zealand. 

Subash’s teaching philosophy centres on innovation, inclusivity, and fostering a growth mindset. Early in his career, a tweet about flipped learning sparked his interest in leveraging technology to engage students. Recognizing a lack of New Zealand-specific educational resources, he launched his YouTube channel, InfinityPlusOne, in 2013, offering free math tutorials tailored to the national curriculum. Over time, his channel has become a vital resource, attracting thousands of students annually and hosting live-streamed tutorials during exam periods, a practice that began in 2018 with 450 students attending the first session. 

His creative teaching methods include integrating Sphero robots to teach trigonometry, using Desmos for personalized assessments, and supporting initiatives like the #GirlPower program to encourage female participation in STEM fields. Subash’s dedication to personalized learning has yielded significant results, including drastically reducing failure rates in mathematics courses and empowering students to achieve higher levels of academic success. 

Beyond the classroom, Subash’s impact extends to his community and the broader teaching profession. His late-night free tutorials, school visits, and inspirational talks on perseverance and resilience have touched the lives of students across New Zealand. Notably, he has helped students overcome barriers to success, with some attributing their career achievements to his guidance. In 2024, he visited over 12 schools, offering free motivational sessions that emphasized goal-setting and lifelong learning. 

Subash is equally committed to advancing the teaching profession. He has presented at numerous national and international conferences, sharing best practices and inspiring colleagues to adopt innovative teaching methods. As the organizer of events like the Ormiston Maths Day and the upcoming “Innovation Exchange 25,” he fosters a culture of collaboration and professional growth among educators. 

Sustainability is another cornerstone of Subash’s approach. His “Butterfly Effect” project taught students to recycle waste into valuable products, raising funds for charity while instilling environmental consciousness. Through his makerspace initiatives, he ensures resources are used responsibly, encouraging students to innovate within environmental constraints. 

Subash Chandar K’s achievements have earned him widespread recognition, including multiple teaching awards and a semi-finalist position for the 2025 New Zealander of the Year – Local Hero Award. However, his greatest legacy lies in his unwavering commitment to empowering students and educators, proving that with perseverance, creativity, and a passion for teaching, one can truly transform lives and communities.
