Colegio Trilema El Pilar - Spain

Colegio Trilema El Pilar is a humble neighbourhood school in northern Madrid that has become an international reference point for teacher development in challenging contexts. Serving 696 students aged 3-18 across more than 30 nationalities, the school operates in the historically working-class El Pilar district, where socioeconomic vulnerability remains a daily reality. Since being integrated into the Fundación Trilema network in 2011, it has built a reputation for delivering educational excellence where it is needed most, proving that rigorous teacher development does not require abundant resources, only a coherent system and deep institutional commitment.

At the heart of the school's application sits an ambitious Teacher Professional Development (DPD) system. Every teacher, regardless of seniority or role, completes 100-120 mandatory hours of professional development annually, organised around two weekly afternoons of reflection, collaboration and formation. Development goals follow a distinctive "thirds model": one-third defined by the teacher, one-third by the school, and one-third aligned with Fundación Trilema's strategic evidence base, balancing institutional coherence with genuine professional autonomy.

The school's signature innovation is the ePortfolio, a digital platform co-developed with Universidad Complutense de Madrid over nearly five years of research. It anchors each teacher's growth in ten research-validated professional standards, captures classroom evidence, reflections and mentoring feedback, and makes professional progress visible, systematic and longitudinal. Already used by over 800 educators, it transforms training from attendance into accredited, documented improvement in practice.

Leadership emerges organically from classroom excellence. High-performing teachers take on co-teaching, school twinning, mentoring and practice modelling before progressing, with remuneration, into formal trainer roles within Fundación Trilema's international network of over 100 schools. The model has been scientifically validated by Universidad Complutense de Madrid and Universidad de Valladolid, with findings showing it is especially effective in low-income contexts because its success rests on pedagogical rigour rather than material wealth.

Teacher wellbeing is treated as structural, not symbolic. Flexible non-teaching hours, peer networks, close leadership accompaniment and meaningful international opportunities sustain retention and motivation. Staff participate in cooperation projects in Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon, Ecuador and Peru, alongside partners such as Save the Children and Jóvenes y Desarrollo, and in pedagogical expeditions to Harvard's Project Zero, MIT, and Finland's Kantvikin koulu. Carmen Pellicer, Foundation President, co-directs the Executive Functions chair at Universidad Nebrija and edits Cuadernos de Pedagogía, keeping the school continuously connected to cutting-edge educational research.

The school hosts around 25 student teachers annually, offering individualised formation plans and attracting emerging talent into the profession. National and international educators regularly visit to learn how excellence is achieved in complex environments.

If awarded the Prize, funds would establish a dedicated school fund to cover essential costs, meals, uniforms, materials, and extracurricular access for families in financial difficulty, ensuring no child is excluded from full participation. Beyond financial relief, this would reinforce Trilema El Pilar's founding conviction: excellence, without exception.
