Dechencholing Higher Secondary School - Bhutan

Perched at 2,500 metres in the Himalayas, six kilometres north of Thimphu, Dechencholing Higher Secondary School is rewriting what education can mean. Bhutan's largest day school, serving over 1,800 students from Grades 4 to 12, has evolved from a modest primary school established in 1960 for Royal Bodyguards' children into a national beacon of holistic education. In 2023, it became the first school in Bhutan to pilot the groundbreaking Bhutan Baccalaureate.

This revolutionary model, rooted in Bhutan's Gross National Happiness philosophy, develops students across five interconnected dimensions: cerebral, emotional, physical, social, and spiritual. Sports and arts aren't extracurricular afterthoughts here — they're core subjects. Mornings begin with Buddhist mindfulness practices; students co-design personalised "learning roadmaps" with mentors; and every child's voice shapes school life.

The school's wellbeing ecosystem is remarkable. The Serenity Haven, funded by Bhutan National Bank, offers students a sanctuary for emotional restoration. A Sensory Room, inaugurated on World Down Syndrome Day 2025, supports learners with special needs, while a specialised vocational classroom opens alternative pathways to success. Ten integrated wellbeing programmes — including counselling, Peer Helpers, Anti-Bullying initiatives, and the Zoala mental health app — create a comprehensive safety net.

Project Dechencholing, launched in partnership with the Bhutan Olympic Committee, embeds sports science into daily life. Every student undergoes baseline fitness assessments, and the annual 10km endurance run now draws students, teachers, and parents — even through pouring rain. The school is also one of just 10 national pilots for the Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools programme, pioneering inclusive sport.

Achievements abound: 1st place in the BB Primary Schools Aerobic Competition (September 2024); victory at the Thimphu Thromdey Cultural Competition (November 2024); 2nd place at the UNESCO International Declamation Competition "Eco Speak"; selection for an RSPN Small Study Grant; and a pioneering ICT-integrated classroom partnership with Korea's Ministry of Education.

Resilience defines this community. When flooding displaced students in August 2024, the school activated a comprehensive recovery response — mental health support, mentoring, meal services, and resilience-building sports — turning crisis into community. Project Tharma, the school's arts-and-community initiative, and a whole-school Comprehensive Sexuality Education programme delivered by every teacher further demonstrate that wellbeing is woven into every lesson, every day.

Community partnerships with Bhutan National Bank, UNICEF, the Chithuen Phendey Association, and the Bhutan Olympic Committee embody the school's Parenting Month theme: "It takes a village to raise a child."

Looking ahead, Dechencholing plans to formalise digital wellbeing data systems, expand peer support, publish research, and serve as a national model as the Bhutan Baccalaureate scales across the country. Prize funds would expand infrastructure, teacher training, student programmes, and community partnerships.
