| Global Schools Prize - Finalists |
King's Academy Prospect, a vibrant secondary school in Reading serving over 1,200 students aged 11–19, has transformed demographic complexity into a blueprint for global citizenship education. With over 60 home languages spoken, 40% of students learning English as an Additional Language (EAL), 38.1% receiving free school meals, and more than 400 in-year transfers biannually (60% from overseas), King’s Academy Prospect has built a powerful case for the Varkey Foundation's Global Schools Prize in the Global Citizenship & Peacebuilding category.
The school's achievements are nationally recognised. King’s Academy Prospect was named the 2024 Pride of Reading "School of the Year," and its parent trust, King's Group Academies, won "MAT of the Year" at the 2025 National Schools Awards. Following a turnaround from a previous "Requires Improvement" rating, Ofsted 2022 judged the school "Good" with "Outstanding Leadership and Management," praising its EAL provision as "very strong indeed." In 2025, King’s Academy Prospect achieved Full British Council International School Award accreditation (2025–2028) for "Outstanding development of the international dimension in the curriculum," with the accreditation celebrated at the Houses of Parliament in 2026.
King’s Academy Prospect’s impact stories are compelling. A Syrian refugee who arrived in Year 10 speaking no English now commutes from London to complete his A-levels and is reading Cyber Crime at university. A Year 7 Afghan boy, previously unseen in his heritage, was embraced during Cultural Week by older students speaking Arabic with him—he said he felt "seen and respected more than ever." The school offers GCSEs and A Levels in 16 community languages and runs an EAL Hub providing food, uniforms, and holiday support to refugee families.
Student leadership drives the school's global ethos. The King's Academy Prospect Model United Nations (KAPMUN), founded by students in November 2024, has grown from under 10 members to a thriving community that has won "Best Delegation" and "Best Delegate" awards at inter-school conferences, including events hosted by Inter Climate Network and The Holt School. International Student Ambassadors lead Cultural Week, the Global Stage Forum, and sustainability initiatives. A 17-day Turing-funded Global Citizenship trip to Nepal saw students volunteer-teach local children, building lasting links with Reading's Gurkha community.
King’s Academy Prospect's partnerships span Oman, China, France, Ukraine, and Spain. The flagship collaboration with Institution Saint Joseph in Le Havre, France, led to King’s Academy Prospect Sixth Formers being invited to the Normandy International Youth Leadership Summit in November 2025, debating global challenges alongside peers from 17 countries. The Air-We-Breathe Project with Southampton University connects local air quality data with overseas partner schools.
King’s Academy Prospect's influence now extends beyond its walls: it coordinates GCSE examinations in 16 community languages for Local Authority schools, advises on the DfE Behaviour Hubs programme, and will host 30 Brazilian teachers in 2027 for the KGA Global Teacher Development Programme. Prize funds would scale access to global leadership experiences, expand EAL family support, and launch a reciprocal international teacher exchange, proving that local inclusion and international ambition are mutually achievable.
