Qingdao Amerasia International School (QAIS) - China

In the birthplace of Confucius—a region shaped for 2,500 years by academic excellence and social harmony—Qingdao Amerasia International School (QAIS) opened its doors in 2011 to add an innovative layer to the rich educational tapestry of Shandong Province by integrating the profound philosophy of the Montessori method with the International Baccalaureate (IB).  The school’s vision to educate the whole child through unconditional love, peace, inquiry, and service, along with its commitment to developing global citizenship in students aged 18 months to 18 years, has positioned it as one of Asia’s most influential educational movements.

At the heart of the QAIS experience is the "Lotus 5" philosophy, a transformative journey that nurtures students physically, intellectually, socially, emotionally, and spiritually. This holistic foundation is brought to life through a 10-Part Peace Education Program, a seamless continuum from Toddler through Grade 12, that treats peace not as a distant ideal, but as a vital, daily practice. By mastering the R-O-S-E and T-H-I-N-K frameworks and utilizing tools like restorative circles, the Peace Rose, Peace Tables, and four-part "I statements," students move beyond simple conflict resolution to become architects of harmony.  Reflecting Maria Montessori’s profound conviction that "establishing lasting peace is the work of education," this approach ignites an internal moral compass, empowering students to navigate the complexities of the modern world with the courage, empathy, and ethical independence to build a more just and unified world.

The inspiring QAIS mission and vision have attracted a “soul group” of highly skilled, passionate educators from six continents, whose dedication and expertise have led to extraordinary achievements. In 2014, QAIS became the first American Montessori Society (AMS)-accredited school in Asia and the first IB World School in Shandong Province. As the only IB continuum school in Shandong delivering the PYP, MYP, and DP, QAIS now ranks #4 in Mainland China and #29 globally on IB’s List of Top Small Cohort Schools. It also holds the #19 spot on HKPEP’s Top 50 China Schools, #16 on Forbes’ 2025 China International Kindergarten rankings, and #44 on Forbes’ 2026 International High School rankings. The twelve graduates of the Class of 2025 earned 211 admissions to top-ranked universities across four continents and over 20 million RMB in scholarships. Additionally, the school is accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the Middle States Association (MSA), and is a member of the Association of China and Mongolia International Schools (ACAMIS). In 2025, Director Dr Chris Vicari received the inaugural ACAMIS Tom Ulmet Leadership Award for more than a decade of visionary leadership.

QAIS's "glo-cal" curriculum weaves UN Sustainable Development Goals into every grade level, with students tackling marine pollution, designing aquaponics, reducing single-use plastics by 40%, and leading a neighbourhood kindness initiative. Students engage in local, regional, national, and international service and action projects through Weeks Without Walls, building solar panels, protecting endangered elephants in Thailand, and constructing rural roads in Vietnam. A decade-long partnership with Sunshine Children’s Hospital and Te Shu Special Needs School has produced powerful student-led inclusion initiatives, from art therapy exhibitions to the Inclusive Sports Club. Additional partnerships with Montessori Model United Nations (MMUN) in Rome and New York City, Green Hills Academy in Rwanda, and School No.72 in Ryazan, Russia, serve as powerful bridges that enable students to transcend cultural divides to discover their shared humanity and their power to shape a more peaceful and compassionate world.

QAIS's influence radiates outward. Its affiliated teacher education program, the Baishan Montessori Teacher Education Institute (BMTEI), has graduated 200+ AMS-certified Montessori educators, catalyzing the growth of Montessori schools throughout the region, while the Qingdao Education Bureau has invited QAIS staff to deliver professional development to over 100 principals and district leaders. Senior leaders at the school are certified Positive Discipline trainers, who empower parents to thrive, while transforming homes into havens of mutual respect and unconditional belonging.

The school’s development model is rooted in the Appreciative Inquiry “4D” process (Discover-Dream-Design-Deliver) where decisions and strategic planning involve the voices of staff, students, and parents, while distributed leadership across the school cultivates a vibrant ecosystem of teacher agency, where educators are trusted to innovate, lead, and evolve professionally.

Being named a Top 10 Finalist for the Varkey Foundation's Global Schools Prize would profoundly amplify the school’s platform and deepen its responsibility to cultivate the Montessori Erdkinder (Children of the Land) Program—a greenhouse and organic farm project where the seeds of sustainability, entrepreneurship, and peace education are sown together. By nurturing the land, students will develop a profound reverence for our shared planet, inspiring a new generation to rise as global citizens who understand that tending the Earth is the ultimate act of diplomacy and the most enduring path toward a harmonious future.
