Liceo Scientifico Statale "Alessandro Volta" - Italy

In the disadvantaged outskirts of Reggio Calabria — a region of southern Italy marked by educational poverty and scarce cultural infrastructure — Liceo Scientifico Statale "Alessandro Volta" has quietly built one of Italy's most ambitious creative education programmes. Serving 1,459 students aged 14-19, this state high school proves that cultural excellence isn't a privilege of wealthy cities; it's a choice, powered by passion.

Founded in 1969, the Liceo has transformed its suburban campus into what the community now recognises as a beacon of cultural life. Its philosophy is radical in its simplicity: art, creativity, and culture aren't extras — they are the primary language through which young people learn to see themselves, interpret reality, and shape their future.

The school's flagship is its Theatre Workshop, running continuously for over three decades with more than 30 productions staged. Its accolades read like a national hall of fame: the Medal of the President of the Italian Republic (2013 for "Pseudos"), the First Prize at the Altomonte School Theatre Festival (2014 for "Inferno"), multiple Medals of the President of the Italian Senate, and repeated second-place finishes in national competitions including one awarded by the Accademia della Crusca and Loescher. Recent productions — Homer's Iliad staged outdoors, Footloose, Raccontami una storia, Jo — have earned standing ovations from both school and wider public.

The Liceo has pioneered Teatrosport, a distinctive genre fusing theatrical narrative with sport, where students with disabilities stand as "the beating heart of the scene," transforming diversity into harmony. Its Civil Protest Theatre productions commemorate mafia victims like Giuseppe Di Matteo and Rita Atria, embedding legality education in emotional, unforgettable performance.

Beyond theatre, students shine in "Art & Science Across Italy" (promoted by Italy's National Institute for Nuclear Physics, CERN, and the University of Naples Federico II), winning second and third place plus two special mentions in the Southern Italy selection. The "Sipari Urbani" (Urban Curtains) project saw students use Artificial Intelligence to reimagine derelict neighbourhoods — an abandoned citrus factory became an astronomical observatory, a forgotten square a zen meditation space. The "Open Churches: Art Speaks" initiative produced multilingual audio guides now permanently hosted on Izi.TRAVEL.

Students have also won the International Solinas Prize for Poetry, national finals in the Philosophy Olympiad (foreign language section), second place in the "Italia Nostra" National Landscape Competition, and an Honourable Mention in the "Scatti di Valore" human rights photography contest. The school choir produced an original anthem, "La Chiave di Volta"; Street Art projects have transformed campus walls; a short film based on Calabrian writer Saverio Strati's Diavolaro was produced by the Calabria Film Commission.

All activities are free of charge and designed with assistive tools for students with disabilities and learning differences. Sustained largely by teachers' personal dedication despite limited funding, Liceo Volta demonstrates that in Italy's deep south, investment in beauty is never wasted — it's the most practical tool for hope.
