Rwanda Coding Academy - Rwanda

In the rolling hills of Nyabihu District in Rwanda's Western Province, a bold experiment in education is rewriting what's possible for African youth. Rwanda Coding Academy (RCA), founded in 2019 by the Government of Rwanda, is a specialised government high school that selects Rwanda's most talented young minds and transforms them into ethical software engineers, AI innovators, and digital problem-solvers — all before they turn 20.

Serving 280 students aged 14–19 with just 30 staff, RCA offers more than education: it offers purpose. Its mission is to inspire problem-solvers, innovators, and responsible technologists capable of building solutions for Rwanda's and the world's most pressing challenges. The curriculum goes far beyond standard schooling, delivering advanced instruction in software development, cybersecurity, embedded systems, artificial intelligence, and data analytics.

What makes RCA a standout candidate for the AI Transformation category is its deeply human-centred approach to AI. Ethics, fairness, and accountability are not afterthoughts — they are woven into every project, every classroom discussion, and every line of code. Students don't just learn how AI works; they interrogate who it benefits, who it could harm, and how to design it responsibly. A flagship student project illustrates this perfectly: an AI-powered computer vision system that detects road accidents in real time to speed up emergency response. Trained on Rwandan road data, it deliberately avoids facial recognition to protect privacy — innovation guided by conscience.

The academy's achievements are extraordinary for an institution barely six years old. Students have built over 70 functional technology projects addressing real-world problems in education, health, security, and transport. In 2025, RCA students swept 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in the high school category at picoCTF-Africa 2025, outcompeting peers from over 20 African countries in one of the continent's most prestigious cybersecurity challenges. Students have represented Rwanda at international innovation summits, engaged in a Hackathon 2024 partnership with KOICA and the Korean Embassy, and participated in cyber-resilience forums alongside senior government and industry leaders.

RCA's impact extends beyond its campus. The academy engages parents through open days and project exhibitions, partners with government and private sector stakeholders, and runs community outreach that demystifies AI for everyday Rwandans. Teachers receive continuous professional development in AI pedagogy and ethics, ensuring the school remains at the frontier of responsible tech education. AI tools are also used to promote inclusion — from adaptive learning platforms to translation tools that help multilingual learners thrive.

RCA's story is one of resilience. Operating as a rural specialist school with limited resources, it has turned every constraint into fuel for innovation. If awarded the Global Schools Prize, RCA would invest in computing infrastructure, teacher training, student-led innovation incubation, and outreach to underrepresented communities.

Rwanda Coding Academy is not simply a school — it is a national promise made real: that African youth will not wait for the future. They will code it.
