Beyond Classrooms: A New Approach to Education

Educational, Cultural and Digital Initiatives Provide Students with Wider Learning Opportunities

Shri Ravindra Anand Sapkale, Assistant Teacher at Vatsalabai Dattatray Charitable Trust-run Gyanprakash Vidyalaya, Bhatwadi, Ghatkopar (West), Mumbai, has been involved in various educational, cultural, digital and community-based initiatives for students and teachers.

As part of international educational activities, students and teachers from the school have participated in programmes and interactions with schools and educators from 27 countries. These activities have included educational exchanges and cultural interactions, providing students with opportunities to learn about different cultures, traditions and education systems. Ravindra has also involved the school's former students in career guidance activities. Alumni working in different professional fields have interacted with current students and shared information about their educational and career journeys. In addition, efforts have been made to arrange educational support for students facing financial difficulties through assistance from students, alumni and members of the community.

He has been associated with teacher-training programmes conducted in connection with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. At the district and taluka levels, he has worked as a resource person and conducted sessions on different educational subjects and teaching practices. He has also participated in training programmes for newly appointed teachers of the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai. Digital teaching has been another area of his work. He has used digital resources and technology-based activities in classroom teaching. Games, songs, dance and activity-based methods have also been incorporated into lessons to encourage student participation and make classroom learning more interactive.

Alongside teaching, Sapkale has been involved in writing and academic research. He has written “Chalk and Dreams” and five other books and has contributed articles on different educational and social subjects to various publications. He has also presented research papers at national and international seminars organised at the university level. His work in educational video production has received recognition in competitions conducted by the Government of Maharashtra, where he secured second and third positions. He also worked with students on a short film titled “Breaking the Silence.” The film received awards in the categories of Best Director and Best Script. Ravindra has also sought the involvement of professionals and individuals from different fields in student guidance programmes. Their participation has provided students with exposure to different professions and real-life experiences. In some cases, community support was also mobilised for students requiring educational assistance.

The activities undertaken through Vatsalabai Dattatray Charitable Trust-run Gyanprakash Vidyalaya reflect an approach that combines classroom teaching with digital learning, international interaction, career guidance, teacher development, creative activities, writing and research. According to Ravindra, the focus of these activities is to provide students with opportunities to participate in different forms of learning and to support their educational development beyond regular classroom instruction.
