From Paper to Tree: A Story of Art and Sustainability

I am Ghazal Kianinezhad, an art teacher, researcher, and environmental educator from Iran. In my graphic design workshops, I noticed the high consumption of paper and the large amount of waste produced during students' activities.

This inspired me to create the "Paper, Tree, Life" project, transforming paper waste into an opportunity for learning, creativity, and environmental responsibility. After exploring the paper production cycle and the importance of recycling, my students transformed discarded paper into artworks using papier-mâché and other creative techniques. They discovered that waste materials can gain new value and that art can build meaningful connections between education, environmental awareness, and social responsibility.

Our shared dream was to organize an exhibition and dedicate part of the proceeds to providing school supplies for underprivileged children and planting trees. Although this final stage could not be completed due to regional tensions and temporary school closures, our students' learning, creativity, and commitment continued to grow. Today, through our Green Art Ambassadors initiative, we are expanding this experience because we believe that sustainable education can plant the seeds of hope, creativity, and responsibility in every new generation.
