2026 Finalists Global Teacher Prize

Stephanie Anne King is a distinguished educator, advocate, and leader whose career has transformed the educational experiences of students from underserved and marginalized communities. A National Board-Certified teacher in English Language Arts, Stephanie has spent over 16 years at Granger High School, a rural Title I school in Washington State serving predominantly Hispanic, multilingual, and economically disadvantaged students. Her innovative teaching methods, emphasis on social-emotional learning, and commitment to equity have empowered students to overcome systemic barriers, trauma, and poverty.

Stephanie pioneered dual-credit English courses at her high school, enabling over 140 students to earn college credits while still in high school. This initiative has now expanded to nearly 1,000 students, providing access to higher education opportunities previously unavailable to her community. She integrates global citizenship, the Sustainable Development Goals, and service learning into her curriculum, connecting local realities to international contexts through virtual exchanges with Morocco, Mexico, Costa Rica, and the Smithsonian’s Democracy in Dialogue programme.

Beyond her classroom, Stephanie has secured over $50,000 in grants for science, athletics, and STEM programmes, mentored new educators, served as a teacher union leader, and facilitated professional development nationwide. She has been recognised with numerous awards, including the NEA Foundation Horace Mann Award for Teaching Excellence (2026), World Affairs Council of Seattle World Educator of the Year (2024), Fulbright Teacher for Global Classrooms (2023), and numerous fellowships with Harvard, the Pulitzer Center, American University, and the Library of Congress.

Stephanie’s innovative initiatives extend into the community through student-led publications, partnerships with local historical societies, and civic engagement projects that document underrepresented stories. She also addresses basic human needs, volunteering to provide food, clothing, and safe spaces for students affected by poverty, gang violence, and systemic inequities.

Stephanie’s dedication demonstrates that education extends far beyond the classroom, combining academic rigor with empathy, equity, and empowerment. Her vision ensures that every student can thrive academically, socially, and globally, breaking cycles of disadvantage and inspiring communities to reimagine the possibilities of learning.
