2024 Finalists Global Student Prize |
Mohammad Erfan Firouzi's journey as a student and environmental advocate has been marked by a passion for biodiversity and a commitment to environmental conservation. From a young age, he had a keen interest in the natural world, beginning his research at the age of 10. His academic pursuits have been driven by a desire to deepen his understanding of biological sciences and to apply that knowledge in ways that benefit both the environment and society.
His academic career has been distinguished by a series of significant achievements. He authored "The Year Earth Changed," a book that combines his TEDx speech with a call for biodiversity conservation. His research contributions at Heriot-Watt University and Gulf Medical University have expanded scientific understanding of ecosystems. His advocacy work with organizations like Emirates Wildlife Fund and the Environmental Agency Abu Dhabi has been influential, earning him awards including the Round Table Global Youth Award for Environmental Leadership and the Junior Eco Champion title at COP28.
Firouzi has also been recognized as a finalist for the International Young Eco-Hero Award and received the WeNaturalist People of Nature Award for his storytelling efforts in raising environmental awareness. His commitment to sustainability was further demonstrated by winning the Gulf Medical University MASE Award and his active participation as a speaker at various environmental forums and conferences, including COP28 and the 12th World Environmental Education Congress.
He has made a significant impact on his peers and the broader community. He founded THE WILDLIFE FOCUS, a youth-led organization promoting environmental awareness and biodiversity advocacy. Through this he has organized campaigns, educational workshops, and community clean-up drives, engaging students and community members in conservation efforts. His leadership roles in student organizations and initiatives have empowered his peers to take action for environmental sustainability.
As Biodiversity Storytelling Leader for the Green Youth Majlis under the Environmental Agency Abu Dhabi, he has led initiatives to foster environmental awareness and conservation, provided leadership opportunities and resources to community members, facilitated access to educational conferences, and encouraged participation in environmental competitions. His collaborations with non-profits and government agencies amplify conservation efforts at local, national, and international levels.
Despite facing challenges as an international student, including discrimination and limited opportunities, his resilience and determination saw him seek support from mentors, pursue alternative learning pathways, and remain focused on his goals, these experiences teaching him the importance of perseverance and adaptability.
He established a YouTube channel, "THE WILDLIFE FOCUS," and a podcast, "The Nature Talks," to educate and inspire audiences about biodiversity conservation. His extensive collection of animal and plant specimens has been used to engage and educate people during workshops and presentations. His storytelling efforts, through writing and public speaking, have highlighted the interconnectedness of all living beings and the need for sustainable living.
Firouzi's digital outreach and social media campaigns have connected him with a global audience, and his capacity-building workshops have empowered communities in various countries.
