Shirley Maisincho Haro

Shirley studies science pedagogy at the Central University of Ecuador and is a passionate advocate of volunteering and creating educational opportunities for disadvantaged youth. Her undergraduate thesis is focused on brain plasticity in the Teaching-Learning Process, and she hopes to spark new educational paradigms for new ways of learning.

At school Shirley was Vice President of the Student Council and is a class president and scholar at university and worked as coordinator of Integrating Knowledge Project, which aimed to solve educational problems in public schools and universities in Ecuador.

In addition, Shirley won a scholarship to collaborate in the transformation of the entrepreneurial ecosystem in the Founderz-FIDAL Scholars Program. She was also selected as a delegate from Ecuador in the Asia Youth International Model United Nations (AYIMUN) Conference and was selected from among 400 applicants to participate in the event "Youth, a new era marked by new concerns.”

Shirley is a dedicated volunteer for several NGOs and charities. She is part of the Children International Foundation where she taught classes on sex education, nutrition and other health topics. Thanks to her participation in the foundation, she was able to encourage and support program participants who are interested in learning about these relevant issues and help spread that knowledge to their family and friends.

Shirley also works for the International Network of Empowered Youth, which has allowed her to positively impact communities in Peru, Brazil, and Mexico. In addition, Shirley belongs to the Ciencia Sí Kids organization, which is focused on getting children interested in science. In her role she facilitates workshops for both parents and children and, in turn, is in charge of the operation of the educational platform. Finally, Shirley is also part of the Mapeko Foundation, which spreads awareness of environmental issues and the importance of being agents of change.

In her spare time Shirley made a web page on human anatomy and created educational resources with chemistry exercises for high school and college students.

If Shirley won the Global Student Prize, she would accelerate the creation of her non-profit Capsula.educativa that allows low-income students or those who have not been able to enter an educational institution for various reasons to be educated by specialized volunteers. She believes that our duty as human beings should be to serve others without the need to receive anything in return.
