Yong Xun Ong

As well as pursuing an Accounting degree at Multimedia University in Malaysia, Yong Xun is the founder of JomStudy – an education mobile application that helps secondary school students study anywhere and anytime. Yong Xun created JomStudy to provide a comprehensive and unified platform for educational resources. Previously, the market had been fragmented, with students having to use separate platforms for different services, leading to inconvenience and inefficiency. JomStudy aims to eliminate this by offering an all-in-one platform, streamlining access to concise revision notes, quizzes, exam papers, and various educational tools. It also aims to make its notes easier to understand than other platforms, offering interactive and targeted educational syllabi for focused quiz practice. To date, JomStudy has helped over 400,000 students study on-the-go, with over 50,000 using the application to revise. 

In recognition of JomStudy’s success, Yong Xun was awarded a substantial social grant by the Hasanah Foundation supported by Khazanah, a sovereign wealth fund of Malaysia. He plans to use this grant to extend JomStudy to more high school students in his country, bridging the education gap that has arisen during the pandemic. He has also recently begun using artificial intelligence (AI) in the platform to provide more value to students who use his free app, as well as leveraging the latest TikTok trends to attract more users with marketing.  

Yong Xun is already winning media coverage for his platform, entering the Forbes 30 under 30 in the Consumer Technology category – and JomStudy has also been recognised by multiple local news outlets in Malaysia, such as The Star, BFM, SAYS, Free Malaysia Today, Sin Chew, and many more. He has been invited to provide insights on student entrepreneurship at university summits and events, including giving a talk at a TEDx event titled "Powerhouse Within" at Sunway University in Malaysia. The purpose of the event was to serve as a beacon of encouragement for those who may feel dejected, disheartened and burnt out by the impacts of the pandemic.  

With the Global Student Prize award, Yong Xun would look to expand JomStudy. The Prize funds would enable him to extend JomStudy’s reach to primary school students across Malaysia, spanning from Standard 1 to 6. Amongst other benefits, this would help break down barriers to education for underserved communities and those from low-income backgrounds. Ensuring that every child has access to quality educational resources could unlock the potential of over five million students in Malaysia alone. Yong Xun would also like to empower schools in neighbouring Southeast Asian countries, including Vietnam, Myanmar, Laos, and beyond – inspiring change on a global scale and ensuring that no student is left behind in the pursuit of knowledge.
